Fun, Fun, Fun in the Mudd!

On Saturday, June 21st, Dan and I got down and dirty and participated in Carrie Tingley’s 14th Annual Mudd Volleyball Tournament in ABQ’s south valley. I’ve participated in the charity event several times before, but this was Dan’s first ever, up-close-and-personal encounter with the slimy brown stuff.

As you might imagine, it is very difficult to play a good game of volleyball while standing knee deep in a pit of mudd. That said, there were, of course, a number of “campfire” moments where the ball landed in an area of the murky court that was surrounded by three or more players, but our team also had several good assists, attacks, and kills. Unfortunately, we only won two of our five round robin games and did not advance to the finals. Here’s a photo of me after our team’s second win and attached below is a photo of Dan in his first game of the day, serving up one of his many untouched “aces” or points for our team.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, a foundation that has been providing assistance to New Mexico's special-needs children and their families since 1963. The foundation’s very first tournament was held in 1995 and consisted of 53 teams playing on 16 courts. The tournament’s popularity has grown tremendously over the years and the event has become one of Carrie Tingley’s largest fundraisers. This year, the tournament had nearly 500 teams and 86 muddy courts! All in all, it is estimated that nearly 12,500 were in attendance for this year’s event and good fun was had by everyone - both spectator and player.
