This Memorial Day we did something a little different. Instead of camping at our regular spot near the town of Cuba in the Sierra Nacimiento Mountain Range (Santa Fe National Forest), we decided to pack up and go to Navajo Lake with our Farmington friends, Vernon and Shelly. We got rained on all day Saturday, but, other than that, we enjoyed the weekend!
For the past two summers, Vernon and Shelly parked their camper above the lake at the Elks Campground and really seem to enjoy it, so, since Dan was already scheduled to be in Durango, Colorado that weekend to photograph the Iron Horse Classic with his friend Barak, we thought it might be fun to do something out of the ordinary and join our friends at the lake. This was also our first trip without Bandit and, although it was a little hard on me at first, I think going to the lake (rather than to our regular camping spot) made things a little easier for me emotionally. I miss Bandit terribly, but the change in scenery this first time out was kind to my heart.
We visited the ancient Navajo Pueblos ruins at Frances Canyon (as well as the smaller ruins in Largo Canyon) and took a nice long drive with the dogs along the San Juan River Sunday morning and around the lake and dam the next morning. Thank you Vernon and Shelly for inviting us to the lake and, as always, for being such great people and fabulous hosts! Here are a few photos from the weekend.
